A big boost to Steveâs ability to progress during his rehabilitation with hiking and running was the inclusion of a Fitbit tracker. A Fitbit is a wonderful device that you wear, like a wristwatch, that tracks your steps, calories, miles, and heart rate, among other things.
While this device keeps count of your steps, the accompanying smartphone app allows you to join challenges with other fitness-minded people, who compete for the highest number of steps. Steve and I both got Fitbits and joined a challenge group of ten people. We were mostly strangers at first, but we became good friends who supported each other, pushed each other, and egged each other on in such a way that we were all vying to be the winner of each daily and weekly challenge.
This camaraderie was instrumental in Steveâs recovery, as the all-day banter in the chat pushed Steve to go out and do as much as he could to become the winner of each challenge. Steve would get so many steps sometimes that we would all joke that he probably put his Fitbit on the ceiling fan while he was resting, although we knew that he did not. Truth be told, Steve stepped his butt off. He exercised before work, during lunch, after work, and all weekend long. Where there is a will, there is a way, and Steveâs will was to recover 100 percent from his accident, and he was at about 75 percent.
Steveâs doctors were shocked. They did not think he would ever be able to accomplish anything more than barely existing, never mind running a half marathon and bench pressing his weight. But even with these grand achievements, Steveâs body still was limited with some movements, and he was not going to accept that. It was actually through Kundalini yoga that his body completely rehabilitated to 100 percent. When we first began yoga, it was very challenging for Steve. Yoga poses are hard enough for an agile person, never mind a person with rods, pins, screws, and plates up and down their back and legs. Steve was determined, though, and gave yoga his all, just like he gave everything else his all.
At first, sitting in easy pose, also known as âIndian styleâ or âcrossed legâ position, was the hardest task of all. Steveâs body just did not want to twist into that position, especially for long periods of time. Once he was somewhat adapted to easy pose, Steve conquered other yoga challenges like touching his toes, sitting on his heels, and downward dog, among many others. It was through the daily stretching of the muscles and the dedication to the practice of yoga that Steve made the most significant strides in improving his physical body, not to mention his mental body and his soul body.
